A noted painter and sculptor of the Bengal SchoolAsit Kumar Haldar is known for incorporating Hindu and Buddhist Revivalist imagery as well as Indian art historical narratives in his work.
Haldar worked across mediums, primarily oil painting, watercolour and temperabefore developing a unique process for lacquered painting on wood. From toHaldar, along with Nandalal Bose and Samarendranath Gupta, copied the cave paintings at Ajanta upon invitation from British copyist and mural technique expert Christiana J Herringham and commissioned by the India Society of London.
InHaldar accompanied Herringham to the Bagh Caves and published his findings in a article for the art journal Burlington Magazine for Connoisseurs. Haldar specifically described the Buddhist chaityascomparing the semicircular arrangement of the caves to sites like Pompeii and the characterisation of horses in frescoes to the work of fifteenth-century Italian masters.

Haldar made a tour of Europe in and soon realized that Realism in European art had numerous limitations. He sought to balance physical attributes in proportion to the magnitude of the subject matter. Haldar's Yashoda and Krisna was not just a religious painting but an artistic juxtaposition of the infinite represented by Krishna with the finite represented by Yashoda.
Haldar also made thirty two paintings on the Buddha's life and thirty paintings on Indian history, attempting to embrace idealism in his art. Haldar was a budding poet throughout his life. He also illustrated numerous poems in visual artincluding twelve from Omar Khayyam. His art on the Buddha and the History of India fell under this poetic umbrella.
