Elizabeth Jane Weston has been all but forgotten, and this inspired me to do some more research, talking to scholars in both the Czech Republic and Britain and visiting some of the places in both countries associated with the poet. One of the people I met in the course of my research was Prof. I have an enormous affinity with her. She and I both grew up in different countries, we spoke different languages, we both write poetry.

We diverge on a number of things, but I have felt myself very, very strongly drawn to working on her and I am writing a book about her life. I was taken to see the grave of an English poet, who — a contemporary of Shakespeare — was infinitely better known than Shakespeare, was in touch with all the great intellectuals and luminaries of Europe, while Shakespeare was pretty much a local hack!

This has happened all through literary history and sometimes writers are deservedly forgotten. Is that not the case with Elizabeth Weston? All intellectuals would not only write in Latin, but speak in Latin. We tend to forget that Queen Elizabeth I was entirely capable of doing extemporary speeches in Latin and prided herself on doing so.

So, knowing Latin and writing in Latin, is something of its time, but, by the age of personal expression and romanticism and the rise of popularity of national literatures, poets were principally admired for what they could in their own language and not what they could do in a classical language. She was not just interested in poetry.

She was also someone who was very into new science, astronomy, new alchemy. And that is also very much a reflection of Rudolphine Prague. It was an extremely interesting place — a melting pot for many scientists, alchemists, astrologers, astronomers, who were all gathered around the Rudolphine court.

But I think we tend to forget, when we talk about Leonardo da Vinci being Renaissance man, that having an interest in literature, music, fine arts, mathematics, philosophy, alchemy, physics and so on, was very much part of being an intellectual in the Renaissance generally. Here are a few lines from one of several poems that Westonia wrote in honour of the Emperor Rudolph.

Sir John Stradling -- Taubmann -- Turning to the composition of Latin poems as a means of seeking financial support for herself and her family after Kelley's disgrace and death, Weston became widely celebrated as the 'Virgo Angla' and was held in high esteem in the international republic of letters of her time.

This collection of poems and letters written by her, to her, and, occasionally, about her, sheds new light on the possibilities of artistic self-representation available to women at the end of the sixteenth century. The core of the edition which contains the Latin text along with a facing-page English translation is Weston's Parthenica c.

While not much more is known about Weston's life after these publications, Ballard posits that her husband was still alive in because of the epistle she wrote, Prague Nonis Mariiwhich was published the following year. During her lifetime, many humanists across Europe, including Jan Dousa, celebrated her poetic achievement. Weston died inand contemporary epitaphs say she died of consumption not in childbirth.
