The author has clearly researched the Newton's career well, from the evidence of play-bills, newspaper articles and show-business autobiographies. But despite his claim to have assistance from Newton's son, what it really lacks is a sense of Newton's character from those who knew him, from first-hand accounts.

As a blow-by-blow account of drunken incidents, infidelities and abandoned wives it is no doubt fairly accurate. But Newton was clearly much more than his misdemeanours: we gain little sense of what made him tick, how he created his memorable screen characters, the quoted erudition of a man who was a friend of famous artists and writers and had a marked talent for spotting a good play or idea for a film.

Claims in the blurb that he 'hid discretion under a mask of folly' and was the man to tell the King he had no clothes were not really followed up in the text: there is little sense of what Newton's conversation was like in practice. The story of his son Nicholas is quite upsetting, yet Newton doesn't really deserve so much blame as Penrose suggests for this, and it is quite clear that his children remembered him with fondness.

Penrose's judgement is often slightly off, describing the brilliant film Odd Man Out loved by Martin Scorcese as 'dragging' and 'dated' and the wonderful portrait of him by Laura Knight at fifteen, which captures all the tentative uncertainly of an adolescent cast off to a new career in a strange town, as depicting him as an 'elegant figure'.

Penrose also interpolates Newton's feelings at particular points of his life, with apparently little understanding of psychology apart from a stab at Freudianism towards the end. I also would love to have known more about the people who surrounded him: his brother and sisters, his friends, his children. He brawls and battles, with authority, and booze, and with his own demons, are the stuff of a great story, maybe a movie.

His tale is also an ideal subject for a book. And this, until something else comes along, is it. I was worried that a self-published bio, with no reviews on Amazon, would be a hack job. And when I read the jacket description, it didn't exactly set my mind to rest about shelling out cash for a purchase and seriously, in the 21st Century, no Kindle version?

To be fair this text is ripped, bleeding, I'm sure, from the text, where, in context, it makes a little more sense, but this is what happens in the self-publishing world, with no sure-handed Maxwell Perkins type editor to make the words sing out. This is a shame, because the book is a good one, deserving of Newton's extraordinary and debaucherous life.

Author Penrose has done a wonderful job of tracing the Hollywood pirate's tale, from marriages and movies, to arrests and altercations. His admiration for his subject, in a somewhat too British-reserved sort of way is evident on every page. And the book, except for its jacket description, has less typos and embarrassments than many a self-published work sold here.

Also, the book cover, opposite that awful jacket description, has a wonderful painting of Newton, in full Long John Silver regalia, which a big New York publisher could only envy.
